Steenklank (Sound of Brick) (2013)

A soundwalk with architecture as a score

Theater maker Anne Rooschüz and sound artist Robert van Heumen take you on a journey along buildings of the Amsterdam School. Children's voices in your headphones playfully make you aware of all kinds of special aspects in the architecture: weird protuberances, useless curves, blind walls, secret vistas. Steenklank is a musical interpretation of the architecture, coupled to a game of neighborhood voices and street sounds.

This soundwalk is commissioned by Soundtrackcity and Cultuur Cluster Asscher. Startingpoint: Visitor center De Dageraad, Burgemeester Tellegenstraat 128, Amsterdam. Length: 53 minutes.

Soundtrackcity organises monthly group walks. For dates and more information visit their Steenklank page. Or you can walk individually by picking up an audio player and headphones at Visitor center De Dageraad (open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-17:00) or by downloading the necessary files in the Soundtrackcity webshop. Note that all text heard in the soundwalk is in Dutch. Make sure you walk with the Steenklank booklet (available when you pick up an audio set at De Dageraad but not included in the download at Soundtrackcity).

The booklet

Steenklank was developed using a score-process: Anne Rooschüz took photographs of architectural details and converted them into abstract drawings. Robert van Heumen took those drawings and put them to music as if they were notes in a traditional score. Steenklank is accompanied by a booklet containing these scores. Some examples are shown below. You can download a printable version here.
