December 8, 2012 A Shackle Affair with Lukas Simonis at Delicatessen / double bill with Trolleybus307 Location: Delicatessen, basement of Pakhuis Wilhelmina, Veemkade 574 Amsterdam Time: 20:30h Shackle is Anne La Berge on flute and electronics and Robert van Heumen on laptop-instrument. Their aim is to explicitly and subtly exploit shackling in both concept and material. Shackle Affair is Shackle‘s extension into working with guestplayers, extending Shackle into trio constellations. At the same time further developing the Shackle Electro-Acoustic Composition System. Guests can be musicians, but also visual artists or other performers. This time gitarist Lukas Simonis. Lukas Simonis has his roots as an instrumentalist and musical ’activist’ in the industrial music and noise rock of the Eighties.Being a part of the Rotterdam jazzbunker scene (a collective that consisted of heavy drug induced punk rockers, freejazzers, early electronic musicians and pre-postrock combo’s) he discovered the delimited world of improvisation. In the meantime & after he played in bands like Dull Schicksal, Trespassers W, Morzelpronk, AA Kismet, Liana Flu Winks, VRIL and Coolhaven. At the same time he was organizing concerts, events and films, first at the Jazzbunker in Rotterdam later on the Dissonanten festival, the Dissidenten festival, Popifilm, Dodorama and finally WORM, a multimedia centre for experimental art. Trolleybus takes its own musical route, and plans its path along the most wonderful vistas. The vehicle seems to be free, as its tracks are not laid down, as they would be for a tram. But, it is, almost imperceptibly, attached to an overhead wire. This wiring consists of the arsenal of sounds and techniques Trolleybus’s three members (pianist Nora Mulder, saxophonist Yedo Gibson and bassist Renato Ferreira) have taken along from their respective musical backgrounds. Thus the worlds of contemporary composed music and improv blend into a whole, and the roles the band members take up may change with the capriciousness of a kaleidoscope. A saxophone may easily turn into a percussion instrument, or the double bass may take up the lead, as if it were a singing voice, in producing a melody that is as beautiful as it is unexpected. From the tranquility of the tiniest sounds Trolleybus may erupt into a deafening hurricane of sound. And in this use of dynamics there is drama and theatricality. It is then only a small step to idiosyncratic, playful and absurd music theater.
