Shackle is Anne La Berge on flute and electronics and Robert van Heumen on laptop-instrument. Their aim is to explicitly and subtly exploit shackling in both concept and material.

Converging Objects workshop at the University of Edinburgh

The Converging Objects at the University of Edinburgh took place from 16 – 19 December 2010, for students from the Sound Design and Composition and Performance departements. taught by Anne LaBerge and Deckard, organized by Martin Parker, participants were Matthew Collings, Marcin Pietruszewski, Clive Mitchell, Colin Chipcase, Stephen Paterson, Christos Michalakos, Gareth Griffiths, Jung In Jung, Brendan Doyle, Lauren Hayes, Nils Meisel, Lorcan Doherty and Tam Treanor.

Quotes from participants:

“Great to gain more insight into how people at the top of their game are working, although perhaps more importantly was getting everyone (esp. those who haven’t performed live electronics) involved and to start playing together. I think the workshop provided an interesting space to test out our ‘instruments’ in a large group setting, which is always challenging regardless of experience!”

“I come from a background of songwriting and I was trying to discover how I might present myself as a sonic artist. Through the course of the workshop I gained a confidence in my new performance persona. […] Anne and Robert gave us some insight into their own working practice in terms of technology technique and asthetic. They gave us a quick history of some of the major players in the field of sound art as well as examples of artists who had influenced their own work. I found this a very colorful and tasty meal, a useful introduction to some ingredients which I now feel I could take into the sonic kitchen myself.”

“The workshop was very enjoyable. Both Anne and Robert as a team, had a very inspiring way of guiding us. Their wealth of knowledge as well as their calm confidence rubbed off on all of us, giving us the confidence we needed to conceive a very enjoyable performance and over-all shared experience.
